synopsis
Excerpts from a discussion between Nancy Nielsen and Holly Fisher, in which Nielsen reads some of her poems while sharing thoughts of what inspired them.
The dialogue is cut with multiple photos provided by Nielsen and her partner and fellow poet, Alan Brooks, together with a few relevant clips from Bullets for Breakfast in which she is a central protagonist. Apparently this is the only extant recording of Nielsen reading and discussing her work.
Nancy Nielsen (1930-2016) was a poet, naturalist, educator, and environmental activist. Her poems often spoke of the ways women and girls are constrained by society and circumstance, and also of her deep love of the natural world. She spent the last 36 years of her life in Downeast Maine with her partner Alan Brooks, who survives her. Many of their poems can be found at:
